AAGPBL Mary “Bonnie” Baker

This photo was taken in the 1940s during a game between the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League’s South Bend Blue Sox and the Racine Belles. Poised to catch an incoming ball was Irene “Choo Choo” Hickson, catcher for the Racine Belles. Mary “Bonnie” Baker of the South Bend Blue Sox was at bat. Known as “Pretty Bonnie Baker,” she was often used for publicity shots and was featured in LIFE magazine. Bonnie was also an all-star catcher and the only woman in AAGPBL history to serve as a player-manager.
