Please share your thoughts with us. Few, if any, of us have ever experienced anything like the current COVID-19 pandemic. The governors of Indiana and Michigan have issued stay-at-home orders, and many of us are not able to go to our jobs or enjoy leisure activities like restaurants, theaters, baseball games, or museums. We cannot gather in groups, or visit friends or family. We are asked to practice social-distancing–a term we have quickly learned–in order to stay a safe distance from others who may unknowingly have COVID-19. Uncertainty, worry, and frustration is all too familiar for many of us. We know there are better days ahead, but for now, we are living through a frighteningly unique and historic time.
With that in mind, we are asking you to help us record history as it happens by sending us your writings, videos, or photographs of the COVID-19 crisis. What are you thinking as you move through your days? How has your job been affected by the crisis? What are challenges you didn’t expect? How are you and your family finding ways to deal with this exceptional time?
You see, the mission and responsibility of The History Museum is to collect people’s stories and preserve them for posterity. As the second largest historical society in the state of Indiana, we hold over 150,000 letters, journals, photographs, and other archival items that help us document history.
In time, we will also ask you to bring us physical objects that have been significant during this period. For now, for your safety as well as the safety of our staff, we are able to accept only items that can be sent to us digitally.
And please, stay safe.
