Simon Pokagon

This picture of Simon Pokagon (1830-1899) appears to have been taken in a photography studio sometime in the late 1800s. A well-known writer in his time, his works include the book Queen of the Woods (1899). Simon, the son of the Band’s patriarch, Leopold Pokagon, was a prominent member of  the Pokagon Band of the Potawatomi. In his day, the tribe was often referred to as Pokégnek Bodéwadmik or “Pokagons Potawatomi.” Simon was a featured speaker at the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893 and met with Presidents Lincoln and Grant.
