In this series, host Aaron Helman dives into some of the spooky stories that you’ll find in our area – from ghost stories to true crime to unbelievable myths, legends, and folklore. Though by nature these haunting tales are rooted in rumor and legend and not historical fact, that doesn’t mean you won’t learn plenty of history along the way! The goal is to help you learn something, stay entertained, and maybe scare you out of your socks while we’re at it!

Series 4, “South Bend’s Own: Schuyler Colfax” is sponsored by Andy and Tina Nickle.

It’s not an exaggeration to say that Schuyler Colfax is on a very short list of the most important American political figures to never become President. Rising to local prominence as a newspaperman, he aspired early on to political life, becoming Speaker of the House of Representatives as the United States entered the Civil War. As Speaker, he presided over the Thirteenth Amendment, ending slavery across the United States; the Fourteenth Amendment, establishing birthright citizenship; and the Fifteenth Amendment, establishing that voting rights could not be infringed upon based on the color of one’s skin. Colfax was elected Vice President under Ulysses S. Grant, a heartbeat away from the presidency – and then abruptly left politics. As a public figure, he travelled on speaking tours throughout the United States, now with roads, schools, towns, and even trees named after him. In this series, explore the remarkable life of the most influential politician to come out of South Bend.
